Attending university overseas is a life-changing experience. However, the steps to becoming an international student can be overwhelming, especially for first-timers! But with the proper preparation and mindset, your studies abroad will be smooth sailing. To get you started, here are 10 tips international students need to know to succeed and thrive abroad.
1. Research the country and be open-minded 研究留学国家,保持开放的心态:
Before jetting off on your higher-education adventure, learn about your destination country. Read up on traditions, climate, local attractions, and public transport. And look into events and festivals that will be happening during your stay, so you can plan ahead and fit them into your itinerary. Not only is this knowledge handy when you pack, but it'll help you adjust more quickly once you arrive.
Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and gain a fresh perspective on the world. However, there are sure to be some cultural contrasts. Being willing to learn and adapt will make navigating these differences easy. Don't be afraid to ask questions, to make mistakes and to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace new experiences, be curious and try new things. It's all part of the journey!
2. Sort your paperwork:
Completing all the documentation needed to study overseas can be time-consuming, so it's best to start early and stay organised!
Firstly, research the requirements and deadlines for obtaining a student visa. Then, check to see if your host country needs any other forms, such as health insurance or English language proficiency test scores.
Taking care of these details sooner rather than later will remove last-minute stress and ensure a smooth transition.
3. Pack smart:
Start by decluttering — and be ruthless! After all, the less you pack, the less you pay.
However, don't forget home comforts. Packing musical instruments or sports equipment for your hobbies, a favourite blanket or cherished photos will make being far from friends and family less daunting.
Additionally, consider using an international shipping company to transport your personal effects to your new home safely.
4. Stay connected:
Being away from home for the first time can feel isolating, so staying in touch with your family and friends is important. However, building a support network in your host country is also essential to a positive study abroad experience.
Join clubs, societies, or sports teams to meet locals and fellow students. Be brave and say hello to people in your classes or Halls of Residence. After all, you're in this together!
5. Say "yes!" to opportunities:
Living abroad opens doors. Take advantage of the opportunity to study overseas by travelling to nearby cities or countries and exploring local culture and history.
Also, consider volunteering or doing an internship, as it will offer you a chance to give back to the community and gain valuable work experience. Additionally, look out for activities organised by your host university, as these are a great way to make new friends.
6. Be prepared to miss home:
Although homesickness can make you feel lonely, sad or anxious, it's important to remember that these emotions are normal and will pass.
To help deal with any down moments, stay in touch with loved ones through phone calls, video chats, and social media. Or do activities that remind you of home, such as cooking your favourite dishes or watching a much-loved TV show.
7. Reach out and ask for help:
Being alone in a foreign country is challenging, so seek help if you need it. Most universities have an international student office that assists with a wide range of concerns, from housing to legal issues.
Don't be afraid to ask questions and take advantage of the resources and support services available, such as counselling. And reach out to your professors for help with coursework or other academic-related issues.
8. Study!
Don’t lose sight of why you are abroad in the first place. There will be times when your workload is high, you feel homesick, or just don’t want to study at all: But put your head down and dive right in! While it feels like a cliché, this experience overseas truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and if you take advantage of your time, you’ll enjoy the benefits for years.
9. Stay Safe
You can enhance your safety while studying abroad by staying informed about local laws and customs, keeping emergency contacts handy, and securing your personal belongings. It's crucial to maintain communication with family and friends, use reliable transportation, and be cautious in unfamiliar areas. Participating in orientation programs and connecting with the international student office can also provide valuable resources and support. Staying aware of one's surroundings and trusting instincts can go a long way in ensuring a safe and enriching experience abroad.
