Orientation Camp

At nightfall on August 20, when the heat during the day had receded, I was walking on the scenic campus, and looking at the sunset glow all over the sky, feeling peaceful and warm.

On the morning of 21st, the 2022 SHBS Orientation Camp opened! The 7-day-long camp included fun lectures and activities, such as English and Science courses, survival training, Double-Excellence Program Trial, lectures on college application and health, and closing talent show etc. Our school had the camp custom-designed for newly-recruited students in order to help them quickly break the ice, build friendships, familiarize them with our campus, teachers and our curriculum system so that they would be able to adapt themselves faster to the new environment and the community.

The opening ceremony of the camp was co-hosted by Ms. Helen Miao and Mr. Tony Wang from the Students’ Affairs Office.

They both extended a warm welcome to the new students, reviewed how the seniors had grown from the very day when they joined the orientation camp, and expressed what they expected of those who were present.

Principal Chris gave a very sincere and amiable speech. He told students to remember only one thing: Whatever problem you meet with in SHBS, you may turn to Chris for help. He encouraged them to seek for help and find someone who could help them solve the problems. He also hoped that everyone would feel free to explore, discover, work in unity and help one another, and make progress together in the new community.

Bruce Feng, a representative of upperclassmen, mature and confident, shared in fluent English his gains and insights from his own experience at last year’s orientation camp. During last year’s camp, he not only attempted to do what he was good at, but also explored some of his potentials he hadn't noticed before, making him have a better understanding of himself. He hoped that newcomers would also seize each opportunity to adapt to the new community and make new friends.

Justin Chi, another representative of upperclassmen, gentle and modest, told us that he had also  been at a loss two years ago until he finished his orientation camp, where he got a clear picture of the school’s curriculum system, knew more about his schoolmates, acquired a lot of knowledge, and had a lot fun. He hoped that the newcomers would enjoy this year’s camp experience.

After the opening ceremony, Tony Wang, dean of the students’ affairs office, gave the students a lecture on awareness of rules. Here on campus, students can choose either to manage their electronic products by themselves or to entrust the products to deans at the students’ affairs office. Guided by the teachers, those who chose self-management solemnly signed the "electronic products self-management commitment". As world citizens, we should all have the spirit to act on contract and keep our promises.

On the afternoon of 21st , divided into different groups according to our English levels, all students attended interesting ice-breaking English classes given by 4 foreign teachers. They made us introduce ourselves to one another in an interesting way, and had us know each other better by playing English games and doing teamwork activities. We developed our communicative skills in English in class through teamwork, and we made a lot friends and had a lot fun!

On the evening of 21st, the students’ election campaign for camp leaders was going on in the auditorium. Before the election, Ms Miao analyzed from the perspective of psychology why people would get nervous. It turned out that nervousness can help us do things better. Stress is a normal and beneficial physiological response. She told stories of challenges, nervousness and embarrassment she had encountered, making students feel relaxed.

The election campaign began at 6:50 p.m.. 17 candidates gave their speeches one by one on the stage. The warm election lasted about an hour and a half in an organized manner. After we voted for the candidates, the election came to a successful conclusion. Confidence comes from commitment, and success begins with responsibility. I believe that cultivated and guided by teachers and seniors, we will keep improving ourselves on the stage provided by SHBS.

I felt so great on the first day of the camp!
