GIA Evaluation

项目评估

I arrived at Pudong airport late on the evening of Friday 24th May. The last time I arrived at Pudong airport was March 2020. Airport staff dressed in full personal protective equipment ensured passengers were adhering to COVID-19 protocols and guided us through the terminal building. This was just the beginning of the pandemic and none of us knew what was to come...

The arrival this time was far more subdued with just a quick scan of the health code required. A much simpler time.

First Stop

My first stop was Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School. On arrival at SHBS, the sense of peace and community that the school is known for became apparent. The grounds are beautiful and each building is well-taken care of. My accommodation was well-presented and I was welcomed by any returning students or teachers coming back after the weekend. The faculty and students at SHBS experienced the challenge of the pandemic just like all schools in China. What they have at the school though is space, green space specifically, which helped with the mental strain of the toughest time during the pandemic. They also had each other and the sense of community at SHBS is second to none.

This was my first in-person evaluation for GIA. I was nervous, excited and suffering jetlag! Despite feeling like I was floating around the school in a dazed state, I could take in the lovely surroundings, friendliness of staff and students, and truly understand why this school is so special. Principal Chris Moses, General Principal Bowen Chen, and Ms. Liu Liu, and all the administrative team ensured I had everything I needed and I was well looked after.

It is clear to me how leadership has an impact on the school. The empathetic nature of Principal Chris, the enthusiasm and dedication of General Principal Bowen, and the unwavering support for all students of Ms. Liu defines the environment in which students and teachers find themselves. This was also noted when discussing the school with teachers, parents, and students.

Observing lessons allowed me to see the personal connection teachers have with students. I witnessed the confidence of some of the shyer students in a drama presentation and was impressed by the last minute adaptation to an interpretation of Clash of the Titans when two of the main characters were sick and unable to attend.

Talking to teachers, parents, and students allowed me to understand how much the school values the individual. Through discussions with administrators, I could witness the care given to the school and the willingness to take on board any suggestions or recommendations.

Many faculty at the school have a profound impact on all aspects of school life from teaching and learning, extracurricular activities, college preparation, wellbeing support and much more. I am grateful to everyone for their dedication and commitment to embodying GIA education philosophy and the teaching and learning methodology.

The first evaluation at SHBS was a perfect start to my time returning to China. I hope this is the first of many visits to the school.
