Ideals Make Life, Life is Beyond Ideals

Nick, 2022 Graduate of ZWIE World Academy

Nick‘s Story

Audrey Hepburn once said,“Psychology tells me that people, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. It helps me to better understand each character, get into the heart of each character, and create characters that people love and acknowledge.”

I desperately want to help people. I want to see them get out of struggle. That's one of the reasons why I chose psychology.

"Depression is just being unhappy."

"Depression is all made up."

"Depression is not a big deal. Just adjust your mood."

That's what I hear the most. In China, more than 90 million people suffer from depression, but the latest epidemiological data shows that only 8.7 percent of them see a doctor for depression. This means that more than 90 percent of people with depression are not effectively diagnosed and treated. Where are they? Maybe they are all around us. Maybe you don't know it, and they don't know it either.

I don't have much to say. For me, psychology is ideal, and I draw a line between life and ideal.

Studying psychology is not simply to read some books and know some theoretical knowledge. The most important thing is to learn, associate and think, from the book of knowledge to their own situation, asking yourself questions. Then carefully think about these questions, seek solutions to the problems and finally master the knowledge. Truly understanding a truth is a very different kind of inner experience than seeing or hearing a truth that you agree with.

Of course, many people may think that studying psychology is equal to work as a clinical psychologist to give people medical treatment, but in fact, only a small number of people who study psychology will take the career path of being a clinical psychologist. There are many other areas of study in psychology, such as social psychology (the study of the relationship between people, usually doing scientific research), work & organizational psychology (can work as HR in a company), developmental psychology (can work in a school), brain & cognition (studying brain, intelligence and memory), methodological psychology (the application of statistics, programming and other techniques in psychology), clinical psychology (treating patients), etc. Although I am definitely not going to be a clinical psychologist in the future and I may not be able to make great changes, I will not let my family and friends suffer from “Depression”.

I like its culture and yearn for its prosperity.

My elder brother had been studying abroad since I was a child. During my summer and winter vacations, I had the opportunity to visit him in the United States and walk around the streets and lanes of the United States. As my elder brother left home at a very young age, my family didn't want me to do the same, but studying in the United States was my childhood dream. Not only because my brother is in the United States, but also because I really want to visit different places and experience different cultures.

I always believe that only by going out can I bring back good things. That's why I want to study at a U.S. university so badly. The reason why I choose ZWIE World Academy was that it offers a better opportunity for me to realize my dream.

In order to follow my elder brother's footsteps, the University of Delaware, my brother's Alma mater, also became my dream university.

I never care about national rankings. What I hate most is going after rankings.

When I was doing my university application, Ms. Vivi helped me a great deal by introducing the universities and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each university and their majors. Although I liked the University of Delaware very much, I chose Stony Brook University in the end. The surrounding environment, transportation and the perfect geographical location of the east coast are what I yearn for most, and I want to stay in the United States to better develop myself after graduation. Therefore, Stony Brook is a better choice for both its geographical location and its psychology major.

I don’t have much advice on study to give to you, but I think ZWA  is really Nice!

I had a very great learning experience here. For me, a class of more than 20 people could be called a big class, while my class only had 15 people. In  such a small class, if I have any questions, I could get answers immediately. My only advice is if you have any problems, you must not be shy, and you should go to the teachers because teachers are always happy to help solve your problems. All the teachers are very professional. Special thanks to teacher "Longge" and teacher "Candice" for their help in my study. I also want to thank Ms. Vivi for arranging my courses and bringing up my GPA step by step, otherwise it would be really difficult for me to apply for my dream university. I was pleasantly surprised by ZWA’s inclusiveness. As a transfer student, the teachers, and students of ZWA had never treated me differently. Here, I also had many opportunities to express myself and made many like-minded friends. Finally, I wish all ZWA students can go to the universities they dream of in the future.

College Counselor Vivi's Words

 about Nick

Handsome, positive, smart, and with strong logical thinking ability, that’s how you would describe Nick when you get to know him for some time. Nick's goal was very clear. He had always been very interested in sociology, especially psychology, and hoped to develop in this field in the future. In addition to studying AP Psychology at school, he also read books in other psychological areas. Every time I chatted with him, he would talk about a certain theory of psychology. The breadth and depth of the chat would make you suspect that the child in front of you was not a high school student. Nick also has his own ideas in the university application. After we worked out his application planning, he completed it with high quality. I hope Nick will keep his passion for psychology and make plans. May his future come as planned.
